Mastering the art of communication

About Me

About Me

I'm Jamie Yve Brown. Most people know me as Yve. I am an individual with multiple disabilities, including Cerebral Palsy, profound hearing loss (Deaf), ADHD, L4, L5/S1 Ridiculopathies, PTSD, Fibromyalgia, Dyslexia and other vision challenges, to name a few. I am a DEI Consultant, Public Speaker, Artist, and Author, and Interfaith Minister. I am transbinary and use they/them pronouns. I have a BA in Communications from Eastern University and was Juris Doctoral Candidate at Widener Law School

Much of my work is around the intersectionality of Disability and LGBTQIA+ issues, and how to develop & implement an Intentionally Proactive Inclusion &Accessibility Statement.

I also help individuals with disabilities or who are members of the LGBTQIA+ Community find their voice using the arts, find resources to help them be the best versions of themselves possible, and learn how to advocate for their own rights, and those of their loved ones.

Mastering the art of effective communication can open doors to countless opportunities in both the personal and professional sectors. Effective communication involves not only expressing your thoughts and ideas clearly but also actively listening to, and observing non-verbal feedback of others.

It's about understanding different perspectives, being empathetic, and adapting your communication style to suit the situation and the audience.

It is important to remember that effective communication is not linear or one-sided. It is cyclic. When communicating there are various elements:

  • By honing your communication skills, you can build stronger relationships, resolve conflicts peacefully, and convey your message with a clear impact.

  • Whether it's through verbal, written, or non-verbal means, the ability to communicate effectively is a valuable asset that can help you navigate through various aspects of life with confidence and grace.

  • Your body language speaks volumes! Your actions overall speak louder than anything you coud say if what you say does not match your actions.

  • Remember, communication is not just about words: it's about connection, understanding, and collaboration.

When evaluating effectiveness of communication, ask yourself:

  1. What did you intend to say?
  2. What did you actually say?
  3. What did your audience actually hear?
  4. What did your audience understand you to mean?
  5. Did you actively seek feedback to verify the clarity of your message?
  6. How effectively did the audience give feedback of their understanding
  7. How effectively did you understand and accept their feedback?
  8. Were you able to modulate your communicationtion frequency so you and your audience would be on th same wavelength?
  9. What noise could have reduced the effectiveness of communication?
  10. How have you minimized the internal and external noise factors to communicate as clearly as possible?
  11. What noise may effect your understanding and acceptance of your audience’s feedback?

Assistive Technology Information

For Newly Disabled Individuals

Are you a person who has just begun to encounter life with a disability? Did you know that your cell phone may offer assistive devices to help you function more in keeping with how you have experienced life previously?

Samsung cell phones, for example offer Live Captioning that provides AI assisted Captions when videos themselves do not offer captioning. They also provide Live Transcribe for helping Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing people to access spoken communication in a written form. iPhone & iPad have live captions, but they are in Beta and don’t always show on the. screen when needed.

Both Samsung and iPhone offer Real Time Text (RTT) If another cell phone user has RTT on their phone you can use it when making calls, even if you are only temporarily disabled due to laryngitis, you may find this a helpful option for communicating with famiy, friends, or your boss.

Need to find other assistive technology, but not sure what will work for you, or have no clue where to start looking or what to look for? The Association of Assistive Technology Act Programs is a great resource for finding assistive technology resources, including lending libraries in your state.

When Universal Design is part of an overall Intentionally Proactive Inclusion & Accessibility Statement (IPIAS), it is a priority because it uses forethought instead of treating Inclusion and Accessibility as an afterthought that must be retrofitted to an existing structure.
